In Memoriam: John Hogan

John Hogan, colleague and friend, passed away on July 28, 2018. John joined Holland & Knight 20 years ago and served in several leadership positions, most recently as Litigation Section Leader. He was recognized as a superb trial lawyer by his peers and by clients. Everyone relied on his sound judgment in dealing with difficult matters. His contributions to our firm and our clients cannot be overstated. In addition to his many professional contributions, he was a close and devoted friend to many of our lawyers and staff.

Prior to joining Holland & Knight, John served as the Chief Assistant State Attorney for Miami-Dade County. In this role, he tried many high-profile cases during the 1980’s, a difficult period for Miami. He also served as Chief of Staff to the Attorney General of the United States, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, Counselor to the Attorney General of the United States, Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United States, and he was the first Statewide Prosecutor of Florida. His exemplary public service was a testament to his selfless approach throughout his professional career. Wherever he worked, John was recognized as a "lawyer's lawyer": that is, he was known both for his keen intellect and for his ability to offer practical solutions to complex problems.

John mentored numerous people inside and outside the firm. All who knew him benefitted from his advice and counsel, always delivered in an unassuming, pragmatic way. His absence will leave a void for many.

John is survived by his spouse, Mickey Miller, and an extended family that includes his siblings and a number of nieces and nephews. His family will hold a private funeral service. We will provide additional information concerning charitable contributions in John’s honor when it becomes available. We will also plan a memorial service for John on October 16, 2018.
