Several states have passed laws related to autonomous vehicles, while a significant amount of bills are still pending. “This changes the liabilities that your companies are experiencing and the items that you should think through from a legal perspective,” attorney Joel Roberson said.

Product liability questions continue to surface as the movement towards autonomous vehicles and drones gets closer. If other Amazon entities contribute to the drone design and manufacturing, there is a chance of product liability exposure, “but they otherwise should be free from liability for things like the drone subsidiary’s negligent operation of the drone (and) damages caused by delivery delays,” attorney Jeff Seul said.

Companies should be aware of the various types insurance coverage needed to cover the potential exposures. “Most (commercial general liability) policies exclude aviation exposure,” attorney Julia Palmer said. “Specialized coverage is needed, and you really should consult a broker.”
