House Natural Resources Committee Pivoting to Tougher Oversight

Senior Policy Advisor Beth Viola spoke with Bloomberg Environment on how the newly-elected, Democrat-led House of Representatives was going to increase oversight and pass Democratic bills in the new Natural Resources Committee. Democrats are focused on several issues such as Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, climate change prevention, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), Mining Law of 1872 and exposing corruption and collusion within the committee. Although very motivated, Democrats will have to work with Republicans to pass their legislative and unless both parties are able to compromise then some bills will be unlikely to pass. One bill that would need such cooperation would give federal agencies guidance on how to plan for climate change.

“In terms of climate, the majority of that will be primarily politically motivated and messaging,” Ms. Viola said.
