The Finance 202: Infrastructure May Be Back On the Table With A Gas Tax To Pay For It

Senior Counsel Michael Friedberg spoke with The Washington Post on the infrastructure deal that is being discussed in Washington after the Midterm election. Both the Democrats and President Trump are eager to accomplish a much needed infrastructure deal, but the process to pay for the project is still being negotiated as neither Democrats nor Republicans want to raise taxes as a reelection campaign in 2020 approaches. President Trump has met with many heads of Transportation and Infrastructure committees to begin discussions and show his motivation to complete this deal, but neither party has determined a way to pay for such projects that would not upset the American public.

“This might be the only thing left on the table that can get done,” says Mr. Friedberg. “But neither party wants to have an increase in the gas tax going into the presidential election, and they’ve said that.”
