Treasure Island Workers Protest Loss of Wages, Health Benefits

Employment Partner Phillip Schreiber was quoted by the Chicago Tribune on the Treasure Island workers protest that occurred on Oct. 8, 2018. Employees of Treasure Island Foods received a letter of termination on Sept. 28, 2018 stating that they were being laid off. The protesters are asking for 60 days worth of pay and benefits that is due to them as Treasure Island did not give them the 60 day termination notice required by the State and Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. There are several loopholes that Treasure Island Foods could use to avoid paying their employees if they claim an exemption due to trying to obtain capital which did not allow them to provide employees with 60 day notice as they may have lost that financing by doing so.

“They have to show legitimate attempts to get money, it’s a relatively high standard (to prove).” said Mr. Schreiber
