Appellate Lawyers Reflect on Legacy of Texas Justice Eva Guzman, Set to Retire Friday
As Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman's retirement date approaches Friday, appellate litigators in Texas are remembering Guzman as a fierce questioner in oral arguments and a great behind-the-scenes mentor to young female attorneys. ... Guzman's high court colleagues will probably miss her a lot, said appellate litigator Melissa Davis Andrews of Austin, who worked at the Supreme Court over two stints as a law clerk for then-Justice Don Willett and then staff attorney for Justice Jeff Boyd. "She was a really great mentor for young attorneys—and especially young female attorneys," said Andrews, partner in Thompson & Knight. "As a female lawyer, it was really great to see someone who was so smart and talented, and to see her succeed the way that she did was really inspiring."
