Time Running Out for Self-Driving Car Bill Automakers Sought

Bloomberg

Partner Joel Roberson was quoted in Bloomberg on the topic of the Self-Driving Car Bill currently being reviewed by the Senate. The bill is unlikely to pass before year end as it must be passed by the Senate, the new Congress after the midterm elections next week and then by President Trump. The bill will clarify regulations for automated vehicles and preempt state and local rules. This would allow companies to deploy fleets of self-driving cars that do not have to follow the safety rules written for human drivers. The midterm elections will have a large impact on whether the bill is passed this year or if the bill will have to be reviewed in 2019 by the new Congress.

“If Congress fails to enact self-driving legislation this year, it will create prolonged uncertainty for both consumers and the automotive industry,” Mr. Roberson said.
