How the “First Step Act” and Other Sentencing Reforms Will Impact White Collar Defendants

Attorneys Juan Rodriguez, Sam Stone and Vince Farhat co-authored an article for The Anti-Corruption Report on the First Step Act (First Step) that was signed into law on Dec. 21, 2018. This Act was part of a series of small but successive reforms to the federal prison system and sentencing under the United States Sentencing Guidelines (USSG). First Step implements important provisions that affect sentencing and serving time, particularly for low-level and first-time offenders.

First Step aims to smooth incarcerated individuals' transition back into society, through participation in recidivism-reduction programs, community-based productive activities and codifying certain sentencing preferences.
