Overview

Gordon P. Katz is an attorney in Holland & Knight's Boston office and a member of the firm's Litigation Section. For more than three decades, Mr. Katz has been a trusted adviser and go-to litigator across many industries.

Mr. Katz focuses his litigation practice on general business, real estate and hospitality, commercial, employment, media and entertainment, professional malpractice, healthcare, intellectual property, and probate and fiduciary litigation and arbitration. He is currently involved in real estate-related and other contract disputes raising force majeure and other defenses arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Katz has litigated and arbitrated a broad range of cases. His clients include officers and directors in securities class actions; venture capital and private equity firms, corporate officers, and attorneys in breach of fiduciary duty suits; a well-known rock music group in a copyright action involving the group's early recordings; an anesthesia practice group in an antitrust challenge to the group's exclusive contract with Massachusetts' second largest hospital; a publicly held REIT in a suit over the priority of the REIT's $20 million security interest in health care receivables; and computer software and other companies in trade secret and breach of contract actions against competitors and former employees hired by competitors.

Mr. Katz also represents national hotel companies in convention contract, management agreement and other suits; travel companies in consumer class actions; financial institutions in asset recovery, workout and lender liability litigation; health insurers in fraud-related suits involving providers; real estate owners and developers in zoning appeals and in suits and arbitrations involving partnership agreements, easements and commercial leases; a bankruptcy trustee in an action for wrongful franchise termination; colleges and universities in employment, licensing and real estate litigation; and book publishers, motion picture companies, newspapers, websites and television networks in suits raising antitrust, copyright, defamation, privacy, reporter access and privilege issues.

Mr. Katz also has experience assisting clients in connection with internal investigations and has represented clients before governmental investigative and professional disciplinary bodies. In addition, he serves as an arbitrator or mediator for commercial, corporate/partnership, real estate, IP, licensing, probate/fiduciary and other disputes.

Mr. Katz also serves as general counsel to the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. In addition, he has served as counsel to a number of political campaigns in Massachusetts and is an associate member of the New England Press Association.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Katz served as law clerk for Chief Justice Edward F. Hennessey of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

  • Prosecution of securities fraud claim of venture capital unit of Boston-based financial institution against principal of portfolio company who obtained client's investment in company by misrepresenting background and company's financials
