Overview

Ji Mao is an intellectual property (IP) attorney in Holland & Knight's New York office. Mr. Mao focuses his practice on a variety of IP litigation and transactions matters.

Mr. Mao represents clients in all stages of patent, copyright and trademark disputes, as well as related matters and state law claims. He has experience counseling clients in a variety of diverse technical areas, including telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, toys, board games and light-emitting diodes. Mr. Mao also has experience litigating Computer Fraud and Abuse Act claims.

Mr. Mao also advises clients on transactions in the pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and chemical fields. When working on complicated licenses and research agreements, Mr. Mao has experience identifying and avoiding conflicts across multiple agreements on closely related technology. He also has particular experience protecting a company's ability to practice and grant further licenses in the field, as well as in drafting and negotiating sponsored research agreements.

Including through his hands-on research that led to his master's degree in medical sciences, Mr. Mao has substantial experience in and knowledge of biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, pathology and human physiology. This background allows him to quickly and fully grasp the concepts underlying the technologies in these areas and advise clients with regard to infringement, validity and IP strategy.

While attending law school, Mr. Mao served as an articles editor of the Journal of Science & Technology Law. His journal note focused on the evidentiary admissibility of the denial of an inter partes review petition. Mr. Mao's master's thesis was directed to the effect of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on pain perception in patients undergoing methadone and buprenorphine maintenance.
