Holland & Knight Achieves Significant Victory for Cognex Corp. in Patent Infringement Matter in Southern District of New York

NEW YORK (May 1, 2014) - Holland & Knight won a jury trial on behalf of its client, Cognex Corp., in the Southern District of New York yesterday involving the infringement of a patent covering high end bar code readers. The case was filed against Microscan Systems, Inc., a direct competitor of Cognex, and Microscan's development and manufacturing partner, The Code Corporation. Both Cognex and Microscan manufacture advanced illumination systems for direct part mark barcode readers. The jury found that Microscan willfully infringed the patent and awarded Cognex its lost profits.

"We are very pleased that the jury found that Microscan was 'willfully' infringing our client's patent," said Jacob Baron, Holland & Knight Partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. "Since Cognex and Microscan are the only two companies selling these specialized bar code readers, it was very important to stop Microscan's use of Cognex's patented technology."

The case was tried before U.S. District Judge, the Honorable Jed S. Rakoff.
