SJC Set to Take Up Duty of Colleges, Suicidal Students

The degree to which non-clinical university employees need to intervene to try to prevent the death of students at risk for suicide will be argued before the Supreme Judicial Court.

“The causes [of suicide] are often very complex and are often unknown. They are sometimes manifested with changes in behavior, sometimes not,” said Partner Paul Lannon. “There is a legally significant difference between a student seeking medical advice and medical help from a health care professional and seeking advice from administrators, staff and faculty,” Mr. Lannon said.
