Yelp Case Raises Question: When Does Law Protect Your Comments Against Boss?

A recent case where a Yelp employee was fired after posting an open letter to the CEO of the company that denounced her low pay demonstrates what type of criticism on social media is protected by labor law.

Labor and Employment attorney Phil Schreiber says its important to understand that there's a difference between complaining about working conditions, which is often protected, and attacking the company's products and services, which is often not.

"If you are talking about how crazy the supervisor is, that would be protected," Mr. Schreiber said. "You just have to be careful about defaming them."
