New Rules for Geologists in New York: Implications for Engineering Firms and Geologists

Partner Anne-Mette Elkjær Andersen wrote an article for the New York Law Journal on the new laws adopted to Title VIII, Article 145 of the New York Education Law (EL) and Articles XII and XIII of the New York Limited Liability Company Law (LLCL), concerning the practice of geology in New York. The geology profession was generally unrestricted in New York, but with the new laws, the practice of geology will be restricted similar to engineering, land surveying, architecture and landscape architecture.

Under the new laws, the use of "Professional Geologist" in New York will be limited to those who are licensed in New York to provide geology services or otherwise specifically authorized under the EL. Ms. Andersen breaks down the individual licensing qualification, seal and continuing education requirements that are now required by law and exempted activities, persons and provisions of services by geology and engineering firms.
