Mary Mross Public Policy Scholarship: Honoring a Legacy to Empower Young Women
Senior Policy Advisor Lauren Maddox was highlighted in The Word Magazine, a publication of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School (DSHA) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ms. Maddox, a DSHA alum, created the Mary Mross Public Policy Scholarship to honor a former faculty member who helped inspire a passion for public service and a career in public policy. The scholarship benefits a rising junior or senior who best articulates a position on a designated public policy issue, which, for her, points to the significance of being able to write and speak cohesively about current issues.
"The ability to write is a powerful skill, regardless of one's career choice. So, too, the gift to communicate precisely what it is you want to convey," she said.
Ms. Maddox also commented on the importance of giving back to meaningful places like DSHA as well as reflected on her time at the school. She added that she hopes the scholarship will push other young women to become involved in current issues and seek to develop leadership skills and civic mindfulness.
"My hope in giving to the scholarship, along with my fellow alums, is to encourage young women to engage in issues and ideas, be open to opportunities, to try new things, travel new places and to celebrate the people and places in life that bring joy," she explained. "The scholarship is really about an opportunity, a possibility and something to think about."
