Holland & Knight Native American Law Attorneys to Speak at RES Oklahoma

Three members of Holland & Knight’s Native American Law Group will present at RES Oklahoma 2016 in Tulsa Oklahoma on Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

Tax Attorney Kathleen Nilles will moderate a panel called "Tax Challenges – Minimizing State Taxation of Tribal Enterprises." The panel will explore strategies for minimizing state government attempts to impose taxes on tribal enterprises, undermining their economic vitality and threatening tribal sovereignty. The panel will also discuss the recent favorable arbitration decision obtained by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Attorney James Meggesto will speak on a panel called "Court Challenges to Tribal Enterprise – Updates on Dollar General and Other Cases." The panel will hear the latest developments on this and other recent decisions and pending legislation to strengthen tribal court jurisdiction to address these and other legal challenges.

Attorney Walter Featherly will moderate a panel called "Workforce – Developments in Job Training and Overtime Rules." The panel will discuss important steps needed to prepare for the new U.S. Department of Labor rules effective December 1, 2016 on how overtime pay will apply to executive, administrative and professional employees of tribes, tribal casinos and other enterprises, and many other employers.
