California’s New Housing Laws And How Newsom May Implement Them

Daily Journal
Chelsea Maclean

Partner Chelsea Maclean wrote an article for the Daily Journal which discusses California's 16 new housing laws that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2019, that were adopted by Governor Jerry Brown. The laws continue a significant trend of increasing expectations on local governments to create sufficient housing to reduce the state's housing crisis, but many await to see how Governor-elect Gavin Newsom will achieve his goal to oversee the construction of 3.5 million new housing units by 2025 in California. Ms. Maclean summarizes each law and how it works toward Newsom's goal in increasing density and housing opportunities, removing barriers to housing production and changes to the Regional Housing Needs and Fair Housing Laws.
