These Lawyers Are Helping North Texas Residents Facing Eviction As Coronavirus Upends Lives

Partner Mark Melton was featured in The Dallas Morning News for his pro bono project helping tenants and landlords understand their legal rights amid the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As jobless claims soared and rent payments drew closer, Mr. Melton began answering questions on Facebook about the Texas Supreme Court's suspension of evictions. That Facebook Q&A has grown into a team of 60 lawyers offering free consultations to property renters and owners.

"You just hear stories of desperation and helplessness, and there's only so much you can do," Mr. Melton said. "And so you can kind of go through the day just watching all this pain, without being able to do a whole lot about it, but I can still do something, you know, and educate people on what the rights are so they're not taken advantage of."
