Rise in Litigation Among the Implications of the Ratification of the Escazú Agreement
Environment attorney José Vicente Zapata was cited in an Asuntos Legales article about the bill to ratify the Escazú Agreement, an international environmental treaty, in Colombia. The agreement seeks to create an international legal framework for the protection of ecosystems and guarantee of safety for environmental leaders. Mr. Zapata commented that under the treaty, communities will have more opportunities for environmental participation when facing projects that are carried out in their territories. He also emphasized the importance of the implementation of the agreement.
"The most important thing to understand is that the execution of the treaty will determine if it really helps or we are only repeating pacts. The regulations apply or don't apply, and in this case that will be crucial," he said.
