Justices' Caution May Hold Key to New Sports Betting Efforts
Law360
Sports Law attorney Samir Patel was quoted in a Law360 article about the potential impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to dismiss a challenge to the Seminole Tribe's sports gambling compact in Florida. The ruling may provide a roadmap for other states and tribal nations seeking to enact similar laws, allowing bets placed anywhere in the state to be considered as taking place on tribal land. Mr. Patel noted that the path forward varies depending on each state's existing gambling laws and political landscape.
"Even though the tribes in Texas may have the ability, or can use the narrative of the decision in Florida and potentially in California as a means to get online sports gambling operated within the state, that governor still has very much a political fight on their hands in order to get a law like the law regarding tribal lands, the one that was written in Florida," he said.
