Lawmakers, Alcohol Industry Probe HHS Over Alcohol Recs
Law360
Alcohol Beverage attorney Jessica Brown was quoted in a Law360 article about the ongoing debate surrounding the development of new federal alcohol consumption guidelines. The article discussed the alcohol industry's concerns and lobbying efforts as lawmakers probe the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over their process for updating dietary guidelines. Ms. Brown commented on the unusual involvement of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) in studying adult alcohol consumption, questioning the transparency and oversight of the study.
"It's perplexing … why ICCPUD is engaging in this parallel process that does not appear to have congressional oversight, does not appear to have public input and is now not producing deliberative interagency communications on a subject of paramount importance to both the U.S. public and the alcohol beverage industry," she said.
