No Magic 'Wand' for the GOP in Scrapping Consumer Rules

POLITICO

Financial Services attorney Eamonn Moran was quoted in a POLITICO article expressing skepticism about a potential rollback of consumer protection regulations under a new administration. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) under Director Rohit Chopra has been active in rulemaking and enforcement actions, and Mr. Moran noted large consent orders during the previous Trump Administration indicate activity won't necessarily slow down. In addition, he said, though lawmakers could turn to the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to overturn some of what they perceive as onerous regulations, a stance seen as "anti-consumer protection" might not appeal to moderates, meaning a comprehensive nullification won't be straightforward.

"I'm not sure 'anti-consumer protection' is a tagline that at least some of the moderates want to bring home to their constituents," he said.
