Broward School Board Used Closed-Door Meeting to End Weight-Loss Drug Coverage

South Florida Sun Sentinel

Commercial litigation attorney Jennifer Mansfield was quoted in a South Florida Sun Sentinel article examining concerns that the Broward County School Board decided to end coverage of certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications for employees during a closed-door meeting – a move that legal professionals and union representatives argue does not fall within Florida's narrow collective bargaining exemption to the Sunshine Law. Ms. Mansfield reiterated that the Sunshine Law's exceptions should be applied narrowly, citing a previous state attorney general opinion, and warned that closed-door sessions should not be used to take up issues that belong in a public meeting, especially when doing so prevents public input on significant decisions.

"The Sunshine Law is construed to favor public access and to frustrate all evasive devices. The closure of a public meeting under the exemption cited also results in the public not being able to speak on a matter of public importance, which the Sunshine Law otherwise requires," she said.
