Overview

William A. Ringhofer is a litigation attorney in Holland & Knight's Chicago office and a member of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice. Mr. Ringhofer focuses on commercial litigation, product liability and toxic tort matters, as well as legal ethics and risk management.

As a member of the Legal Profession Team, Mr. Ringhofer's legal ethics practice involves representing attorneys and law firms in various professional responsibility, disciplinary defense, regulatory compliance and other legal ethics matters. He advises law firms and lawyers on ethical and compliance issues related to hiring and conflict screening procedures and often litigates matters involving conflict of interest and disqualification issues. Mr. Ringhofer also represents law firms and investors in transactions between law firms and management service organizations (MSOs).

Additionally, as a member of Holland & Knight's Product Liability Team, Mr. Ringhofer works on matters involving product warranty and performance issues concerning a variety of products, including in the automotive and transportation industries. He has significant experience in complex toxic tort defense matters, including benzene and asbestos litigation.

Mr. Ringhofer's commercial litigation experience includes handling matters involving commercial real estate foreclosures and receiverships.

While in law school, Mr. Ringhofer worked at the Notre Dame Tax Clinic, where he assisted low-income taxpayers with state and federal tax controversies, drafted tax court petitions and assisted in advising clients on how to best manage their tax deficiencies. He also helped to start the school's First Generation Professionals organization and served as the group's inaugural president.

  • Represented a large manufacturing company with respect to claims of employee workplace toxic exposures
  • Represented manufacturers and premises owners in asbestos litigation
  • Represented consumer products sellers in benzene litigation
  • Represented a contractor in a worksite dispute concerning asbestos exposure

  • Advised law firms and investors in management service organization (MSO) transactions
  • Advised lawyers and law firms on various professional responsibility, legal ethics and conflicts issues
  • Advised in-house counsel on various legal ethics, risk assessment and compliance issues
  • Initiated and defended major litigation on behalf of lawyers and law firms, including attorney and judicial disqualification proceedings
  • Represented lawyers, law firms and companies in unauthorized practice of law and other disciplinary investigations, including before state bar disciplinary boards
  • Represented lawyers and law firms in law firm partnership disputes

  • Represented court-appointed receivers in foreclosure matters and disputes over real estate contracts and earnest money deposits
  • Represented commercial lenders in complex commercial real estate foreclosure litigation
