Public Finance Attorney Derrick Mitchell Joins Holland & Knight in Houston

HOUSTON (January 14, 2019) – Derrick Mitchell, a public finance attorney with almost two decades of experience, has joined Holland & Knight's Houston office as a partner. He will also be a member of the firm's national Public Finance Team. Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Mitchell was a partner with Bracewell.

"Derrick's arrival is notable because it signifies our team's expansion into the Texas market," said Woody Vaughan, head of the firm's national Public Finance Team. "Derrick is well-known in Houston and throughout the state, serving as bond counsel on some of the most notable municipal financings."

Mr. Mitchell serves as bond counsel and disclosure counsel for tax-exempt financings for cities, counties, state agencies and independent school districts. He also represents national and regional investment banking firms as underwriter's counsel in bond and interest rate swap transactions. His practice emphasis includes general obligation and revenue bonds, including transportation revenue, industrial revenue, higher education, mortgage revenue, pollution control and non-profit hospital bonds.

Mr. Mitchell currently serves as chairman of the board of Scenic Houston, the region's primary advocate for visually appealing streets. He is also a member of Texas Southern University's Board of Regents.

Mr. Mitchell received a J.D. degree from the University of Houston Law Center and a B.B.A. degree from the University of Houston.

Holland & Knight's Public Finance Team, which includes more than 20 attorneys around the country, has participated in governmental debt issues since the 1960s. Members of the team have served as bond counsel, underwriter's counsel, disclosure counsel or other multiple roles as counsel for more than $18.2 billion in principal amount of debt during the past five calendar years.
