The deep recession came in like a flood through the retail market, drowning many of the "mom-and-pop" shops and restaurants. Some department stores are surviving on specials such as "friends and family" sales and coupons.

Nevertheless, downtowns are surging with urban street retail housing, cool hipster boutiques, fusion restaurants and clubs – all counting on the traffic of new walkable, urban centers – and new big box retailers are capitalizing on the downfall of their predecessors to pick up multiple locations in a new market.
