Prisoner Rights with Alan Mills

@theBar, The Chicago Bar Association (CBA)

Legal ethics attorney Trisha Rich hosted an episode of The Chicago Bar Association's (CBA) @theBar podcast focused on the rights of incarcerated individuals. The episode features Alan Mills, executive director of the Uptown People's Law Center, a prominent legal aid organization in Chicago founded in 1975. Mr. Mills talks about how he became involved with prisoner litigation, based on observing his mother advocate for prisoner rights, before moving on to analyze the Monroe v. Bowman case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, a class action lawsuit filed by transgender women prisoners in Illinois alleging the Illinois Department of Corrections denied them access to gender-affirming care. Mr. Mills discusses the issues specific to the Monroe case as well as the general landscape surrounding gender-affirming care in prisons, along with the effects of politics and the media on public perception and engagement.
