Post-Expo Mining Balance in Panama – Why Panama Is Important in Mining

La Voz Minera EMG

Mining attorney Estefanny Pardo presented the radio program in partnership with La Voz Minera EMG titled "Minería al Día con Estefanny Pardo." In this episode, Ms. Pardo recounts her participation in the International Mining Expo of Central America and the Caribbean and analyzes the case of the Cobre Panamá mine, whose contract was declared null and unconstitutional by the Panamanian Supreme Court. She describes how this decision led to the closure of the country's main copper mine, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs, inability to export the concentrate already produced and sharp decrease in royalties and fiscal revenues, even though the project represented about 5 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP). Ms. Pardo explains that the ruling was based, among other aspects, on the lack of prior consultation and on environmental considerations, which has revived the debate on the boundaries among environmental protection, legal certainty and economic development in strategic projects involving critical minerals for the energy transition.
