Mining in Venezuela: Status of the Mining Sector

La Voz Minera EMG

Mining attorney Estefanny Pardo presented a radio program in partnership with La Voz Minera EMG titled "Minería al Día con Estefanny Pardo." In this episode, Ms. Pardo examines the current state of mining in Venezuela and its viability as an economic driver following major geopolitical events, with a focus on the Orinoco Mining Arc created in 2016 under an economic emergency decree. She analyzes main challenges to any potential rebuilding of the sector, including the lack of prior consultation with Indigenous communities, environmental risks associated with substances such as mercury and cyanide, presence of informal and irregular groups, and impact on energy security. Ms. Pardo also outlines measures to encourage foreign investment, such as strengthening legal certainty, reviewing contracts and social and environmental obligations, improving geological transparency and aligning with international standards for mineral traceability and certification.
