Coal: Measures Adopted in the U.S. vs. Measures Adopted in Colombia
Mining attorney Estefanny Pardo presented a radio program in partnership with La Voz Minera EMG titled "Minería al Día con Estefanny Pardo." In this episode, Ms. Pardo contrasts coal policy measures in Colombia and the United States under the Trump Administration. She observes that Colombia's coal sector has been affected by declining exports, lower international prices, export restrictions and tax measures, which have reduced revenues, weakened cash flow, put jobs at risk and lowered royalties and other payments to local governments. She notes that the United States has lowered coal royalties, eased certain regulatory burdens and encouraged the operation or reactivation of coal infrastructure as part of an "energy dominance" strategy. Ms. Pardo argues that this comparison exposes Colombia's lack of a realistic reindustrialization policy, particularly in light of rising energy demand and the electricity needs associated with technologies such as artificial intelligence.
