Gas Crisis in the Energy Transition in Colombia
Energy & Natural Resources attorney Milton Montoya published a column in Diario Occidente calling attention to the future natural gas shortage in Colombia and the implications for the country. According to recently published reports, in 2025, the production of natural gas will be 7.5 percent below national demand, which will increase to 16 percent in 2026. Mr. Montoya points out that natural gas is used by 12 million families in Colombia, especially in vulnerable populations, so the loss of energy autosufficiency can have a grave social impact, in addition to negative effects on the industrial, commercial and vehicular sectors, without immediate regulatory measures. The author also indicates the policy of the current administration not to sign new contracts for hydrocarbon exploration and production, in combination with contradictory messages from governmental institutions, has created uncertainty for the country's energy sector and potential investors. The column concludes by emphasizing that Colombia cannot cede the advantage of its own energy resources that advance an ordered and responsible energy transition, and it should carefully safeguard its energy sovereignty and independence.
