Mining and Biodiversity
Diario Occidente
Energy and Mining attorney Milton Montoya published a column in Diario Occidente on the challenges and opportunities in the relationship between mining and biodiversity, following the COP16 conference held in Cali, Colombia. Mr. Montoya highlights the growing demand for minerals for the energy transition and the need to balance mining development with environmental preservation. He analyzes industry initiatives to improve practices, such as the Consolidated Mining Standard, and points out the lack of binding agreements at COP16 to reconcile mining and biodiversity. He also addresses the importance of supporting small and medium-sized miners in modernizing their operations as well as the absence of concrete actions against illegal mining.
