Energy and Mining attorney Milton Montoya published a column in Diario Occidente analyzing Colombia's current mining sector landscape and recent government actions focused on formalization and the protection of small-scale miners. Mr. Montoya highlights the shift toward increased state control, including proposed legislation to create a state-owned mining company and restrict private activity, as well as new environmental zoning measures that further limit mining operations. He cautions that these changes, alongside tax and regulatory uncertainty, risk stifling investment and innovation. This will call for future policies that promote sustainable mineral development, innovation and public-private partnership in support of Colombia's energy transition.
