Suriname's Offshore Transformation
International transactions attorney Peter Baumgaertner and Summer Associate Jack Emerson co-authored a Latinvex article analyzing Suriname's emergence as a significant offshore oil and gas producer and the opportunities reshaping its economy and energy sector. The country has experienced remarkable growth, transforming from a nation that defaulted on foreign debt in 2020 to one of the main conversation points in the global energy industry. The article examines major offshore developments, including the GranMorgu project and discoveries in Block 52, as well as the role of state-owned Staatsolie in managing the country's petroleum resources, which include offshore reserves of 2.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent, according to international oil companies' estimates. The authors also discuss the economic impact of Suriname's expanding energy industry, key developments highlighted at the 2026 Suriname Energy, Oil & Gas Summit (SEOGS), and the infrastructure, investment and regulatory priorities that will be essential as the country advances toward first oil production in 2028 and first gas production by 2030.
