Expansion of Rules Should Not Burden Associates with Good Practices, Expert Says

BNA Health IT Law & Industry Report
HIPAA Partner Shannon Hartsfield was quoted in a BNA Health IT Law & Industry Report article titled, "Expansion of Rules Should Not Burden Associates with Good Practices, Expert Says."

The article reports that subcontractors and service providers involved in the exchange of personal health information should not be overburdened by the recent expansion of HIPAA privacy and security rules if they already have good practices in place. Ms. Hartsfield noted that business associates of health care entities already covered by HIPAA will need to comply with the security rules, need written policies and procedures, and will need to perform other tasks covered entities have been doing for many years. “We are going to be seeing a renewed focus on business associates and a need for business associates to implement HIPAA-like compliance programs," she said.
