Native American Law Partner James Meggesto provided his insight for a Boston Globe article about the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe's decade-long legal challenges involving a casino.
The tribe is now seeking legislation from Congress to prevent losing its rights and benefits, and to affirm their reservation status so they can follow through with their plans to build a $1 billion resort casino on their land in Taunton, after two other failed attempts in nearby cities. Meanwhile, other tribes have had immense success in opening and operating casinos in the region.
“We are a country [where] everyone has a right to file a lawsuit,” said Mr. Meggesto, adding that these cases come down to "economic jealousy."
