Cannabis Banking Reform 'Closer than Ever,' D.C. Insiders Tell Benzinga Conference: Cannabis ETF on the Move Tuesday

Benzinga

Government relations attorney Ed Perlmutter was quoted in a recent Benzinga article about forthcoming regulatory changes that could have a significant impact on the cannabis industry. Before joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Perlmutter served in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he introduced the Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation (SAFER) Banking Act, which would allow legal cannabis businesses to access banks and financial institutions. Washington, D.C. insiders believe the SAFER Banking Act will be attached to a must-pass piece of legislation, signaling that fundamental industry changes are imminent, according to Mr. Perlmutter.

"We're closer than ever," he said. "This is a major piece of legislation and on the two paths — rescheduling and legislation — we're farther along than we've been in 50 years. That doesn't mean we're done, we've got a lot of work to do but we are on the cusp."

Mr. Perlmutter's comments were taken from his panel, "Top Policy Insights from D.C. Insiders ft. Gardner & Perlmutter," at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference in Florida.
