Legislation, Outreach Could Help Tribal Taxpayers Access Tax Credits

Tax Notes
Native American Law attorney Kenneth Parsons was quoted in a Tax Notes article about the challenges faced by Native American taxpayers in accessing tax credits and the need for legislative changes and better outreach to tribal communities. The article highlighted issues such as the unique family structures in Native American communities, difficulties in proving eligibility for credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC), and the lack of tax preparers familiar with the special tax circumstances that apply to tribal members. Mr. Parsons commented in the disparities among tribes' abilities to provide tax-related assistance to their members.

"Some tribes have the resources to help their members find a preparer who knows these types of specific issues, and not every tribe has that advantage," he said.
