Holland & Knight Launches Export Control Disputes and Advocacy Team
Export controls and national security attorney Christopher Stagg was interviewed by The National Law Journal about his move to Holland & Knight and subsequent launch of the firm's Export Control Disputes and Advocacy Team. The practice comprises a multidisciplinary group of attorneys with experience in export controls, white collar defense and appellate matters prepared to assist clients with high-stakes dispute resolution and advocacy involving U.S. export control laws before regulatory agencies, federal courts and Congress, as well as between private parties. Mr. Stagg commented the newly created team responds to a growing need for multiple perspectives when counseling clients in this field, a trend he's noticed in his years advising businesses ranging from small startups to global Fortune 500 companies. He added that under the incoming Trump Administration, which portends to broaden tariffs and increase sanctions, demand will likely continue to pick up.
"I've noticed certain types of matters require a greater perspective, a multidisciplinary focus. So not just looking at it as an export control regulatory lawyer, but also looking at it in terms of what's the white collar issues? What's the appellate and other legal issues involved?" he explained. "Sometimes what happens is you're looking at an issue, you're trying to defend a company, say, in an enforcement case, and there's other legal issues that are implicated. So I'm seeing this more and more come up where it's not just export controls, but constitutional issues, statutory issues. So it's [like] having a dedicated group focus on all of those issues."
