A Shipping Czar, China and Maritime Power Plays: Mapping Donald Trump's First 100 Days
Maritime attorney Sean Pribyl was cited in a TradeWinds article previewing what the first 100 days of the second Trump Administration could bring for the maritime sector. The article covered areas including deregulation, Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) appointments, executive orders and increasing tensions with China. Mr. Pribyl commented that among the immediate actions President-Elect Donald Trump is expected to take is a reversal of President Joe Biden's moratorium on new liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and ban on new oil and gas projects in U.S. coastal territory, though the latter may prove more difficult to achieve. He also noted that though a deregulatory agenda could boost business activity, the industry does rely on certain processes, such as those related to Jones Act filings, to carry out day-to-day operations. Finally, he talked about Trump's proposed tariffs, saying the new administration could formulate them quickly, but what exactly they look like remains unclear.
"The issue is, what's real and what's a negotiation tactic?" he explained. "I think you could see the imposition of, or at least attempts for, new tariffs very early in the first days. What that actually looks like, what percentage, what countries, what products — the devil's in the details there."
