Labor attorney Camilo Cuervo was cited in an article published by Portafolio about the regulatory framework surrounding workplace harassment in Colombia. Mr. Cuervo explained that, in the private sector, those responsible for harassment may face financial penalties and even termination of employment for just cause. He also highlighted the importance of Workplace Coexistence Committees as the first spot for reporting and prevention and noted that there are multiple avenues of protection for victims as well as mechanisms that promote respectful work environments.
"Sanctions must be imposed by a labor judge, who can order the payment of fines, coverage of medical expenses resulting from the harassment or compensation for damages," he said.
