Online Gaming Tax Was the Lowest Contribution in the Emergency
Labor attorney Camilo Cuervo was mentioned in a La República article examining the revenue from taxes that Colombia's government announced after declaring an economic emergency in the Catatumbo region. According to the National Taxes and Customs Directorate (DIAN), $108.933 billion was raised, much less than the number planned by the Interior Ministry; for example, the government took in $20.887 billion from the online gambling tax, in comparison with the $519 billion it forecast. Mr. Cuervo expressed his perspective on the reasoning behind these duties, given that they remain in effect even though the state of emergency has been lifted.
"The emergency measure was lifted, but the temporary taxes were maintained. This suggests that the measures were not adopted to attend to the emergency but rather to raise income," he opined.
