'Fracking': Can the Controversial Method Solve Colombia’s Gas Crisis?

Energy & Natural Resources attorney Milton Montoya was quoted in an article published by Cambio about the natural gas crisis facing Colombia and the controversial debate surrounding fracking as a possible solution. Mr. Montoya explained that, legally, hydraulic fracturing is not prohibited in the country, although it faces significant challenges regarding prior consultations and environmental licensing. He also highlighted the associated political and social challenges, emphasizing that prior consultation processes often complicate the viability of resource exploitation.

"There is a serious problem in the mining and energy sector regarding prior consultation and environmental licensing processes. Unfortunately, prior consultations have become an extortion tool used by communities against companies, and also a tool that companies do not apply with the rigor they should," he said.
