How I Made Law Firm Leadership: 'Realize That You Cannot Change the World in a Day,' Says Joseph Guay of Holland & Knight
Partner Joseph Guay, who leads Holland & Knight's Real Estate Section, was featured in a Q&A with Law.com as part of a profile series on law firm leaders. Mr. Guay became the section leader in 2011, and he said one of the biggest challenges he initially faced was learning the business aspects of his new role, along with the amount of time involved in management at an AmLaw 25 law firm. He also talked about technology and business development resources the firm offers, from data and business intelligence capabilities to sophisticated pricing teams to strong mentorship programs, that enable the continued success of lawyers and staff. His advice for aspiring leaders? "Realize that you cannot change the world in a day," meaning it's important to develop consensus from fellow partners and associates in striving to achieve goals or implement changes. He additionally shared that his experience being guided as a new lawyer inspires him to give back.
"My greatest professional joy comes from helping others succeed – whether it's supporting an associate on the path to partnership, assisting a lateral partner in leveraging our platform, guiding an attorney in securing new business or even helping someone explore opportunities outside of Big Law," he remarked. "...Being in a position to offer my time and support to others is incredibly fulfilling. It not only strengthens our firm but also enriches the legal profession by helping create opportunities and foster growth across the industry."
