Canada Thinks Its Trade Talks with Trump Are Unique. Does That Matter?
International Trade attorney Patrick Childress was mentioned in a New York Times article detailing the current state of trade talks between the United States and Canada. The discussions on tariffs are following a different timeline than trade negotiations with other countries; the deadline for a deal with Canada is July 21, 2025, compared to the now-extended deadline of Aug. 1, 2025, for other nations. Mr. Childress, who previously represented the U.S. as an attorney at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), commented that President Donald Trump's decision to push back the deadline for deals with other countries complicates the situation facing Canada.
"The Canadian government will now be competing to win the attention of U.S. negotiators with scores of other governments," he said.
