'Click to Cancel' Left to the States, For Now

Consumer protection attorney Brian Goodrich was quoted in an article published by TechTarget about the recent federal appeals court decision to strike down the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) rule requiring subscription cancellations to be as easy as sign-ups. The ruling leaves states to enforce their own varying laws on subscription cancellations, creating a challenging patchwork for businesses operating nationally. Mr. Goodrich noted that this lack of a consistent federal standard complicates compliance for companies doing business across multiple states.

"This ruling leaves businesses in a far more difficult position, because this rule really would have clarified and set uniform rules of the road for operating throughout the country. Now you have 15 divergent standards," he said.
