Environmental attorney María Camila Aponte was cited in El Espectador's coverage of a new resolution from Colombia's Ministry of Mines and Energy (MinMinas) that sets rules for the coexistence of mining and energy projects in overlapping areas. Ms. Aponte illustrated that "when an oil project is assigned an exploration area, it is usually much larger than the area ultimately used to exploit the resource." She emphasized two advances: firm timelines for negotiation or expert review, and a distinction between simple overlap and actual conflict, so not every overlap requires an agreement. These changes, she noted, should reduce paralysis, increase legal certainty and help unlock stalled renewable capacity.
