Revamped Energy Regulator to Navigate Trumps Power Priorities

Bloomberg Law

Energy attorney Willie Phillips was cited in a Bloomberg Law article on how a fully staffed Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will tackle soaring electricity demand under a Trump Administration with competing energy priorities, from data center and artificial intelligence (AI) load growth to evolving court constraints on environmental review. Stakeholders have called for FERC, with two newly confirmed commissioners, to protect its independence while pursuing a strategy to maintain reliability and affordability. Mr. Phillips, the former FERC chair and commissioner, talked about the implications of recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings for streamlined permitting and commented on near-term grid and market challenges tied to rapid load growth.

"[FERC's] immediate priorities [are to] make sure that we have enough generation and transmission to meet the surging demand and keep the grid reliable and affordable for consumers," he said.
