Health Care Weekly
Healthcare & Life Sciences Team Co-Leader Michael Werner was quoted in The Capitol Forum's "Health Care Weekly," a roundup of notable developments affecting providers and industry. This edition summarized, among other topics, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) draft guidance aimed at reducing animal testing in certain preclinical safety studies. Capitol Forum reported that the guidance builds on the FDA's broader agenda for clinical trials and reflects growing bipartisan support for expanding the use of validated alternative approaches and weight-of-evidence (WoE) assessments. Mr. Werner noted that shifting away from animal studies will take time but pointed out that progress will come from using proven alternatives.
"I think what you're seeing is FDA [support] and bipartisan support in Congress that we should be moving away from animal testing," he said. "I don't think anybody believes you could do it overnight."
