Environment Minister Says Environmental Licensing Can No Longer Be Used as a "Weapon": Experts Explain How Far the Rules Can Be Streamlined

Environmental attorney María Camila Aponte was cited in an El Tiempo article regarding the government's renewed debate over potentially streamlining environmental licensing procedures in Colombia. The article examined the scope of reforms that could expedite environmental permitting processes, as well as legal and constitutional limits that constrain changes to the licensing system. María Camila explained that there is room to adjust operational rules through regulatory reforms, provided the essential obligations established by law remain unchanged, and emphasized that it is possible to improve procedural efficiency without lowering environmental protection standards.

"These are not mutually exclusive objectives. This is a false dilemma that must be overcome," she said.
